We are committed to teaching economically disadvantaged children in the East End community of Newport News how to grow and harvest fresh fruits and vegetables, make healthy food choices, and learn how those choices impact their long-term physical and mental health. Through the acquired knowledge of gardening and growing food, they also learn the business of managing and selling their produce, professionalism, and woodworking skills to build our greenhouse, harvest shelving, signs, and much more. The produce of the harvest will be made affordable and accessible to every community member who needs or desires it.
The East End Community Food Desert: Not everyone in the East End community of Newport News has access to healthy and affordable food. We strengthen the community through our focus on healthy food consumption and preparation, and its generational impact on the health of economically disadvantaged youth and their families within the community. A "food desert" refers to the inaccessibility to sources of healthy food, as measured by distance to a store, as well as the number of stores in an area. Not everyone in the East End community of Newport News has access to healthy and affordable food. Furthermore, we strengthen the community through our focus on healthy food choices and its real and potentially generational impact on the health of young individuals and their families within the community.
